Wasiu Olowu, MBBS, FMCPaed., graduated from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Nigeria, in 1985. He trained in postgraduate paediatric medicine and nephrology at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Osun State, Nigeria, between 1988 and 1993. He has been the pioneer head of the Paediatric Nephrology and Hypertension Unit, Department of Paediatrics, OAUTHC, since 1994.
Prof Olowu has been a full professor of paediatric nephrology and hypertension at the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, since 2009. He briefly headed the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) between August 1, 2012, and July 31, 2013. He returned to head the department from August 1, 2018, to July 31, 2021.
He is clinically focused on acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), nephrotic, and hypertensive patients’ follow-up. His research interests include the pathologic basis for AKI of secondary origin and the clinicopathologic correlation between proteinuric nephropathy and AKI. He is a co-investigator on the role of APOL1, MYH9 and other risk variants susceptibility to CKD in sub-Saharan African children and adults: an H3AFRICA kidney disease research network initiative.
Prof Olowu has nearly seventy publications in reputable journals, mostly in nephrology. He was once an associate editor of the Nigerian Journal of Health Sciences; he is now an editorial consultant. He was an international member of the Abstract Review Sub-Committee of the World Congress of Nephrology in Vancouver, Canada, 2011. Member, Editorial Board, World Journal of Nephrology, 2011 to date. Prof Olowu served as the sole African representative on the KDIGO (Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcome) Sub-committee on Diabetes Mellitus-Associated Chronic Kidney Disease (USA) between 2019 and 2025. He was a sabbatical professor at the University of Maiduguri between 2017 and 2018. Prof Olowu has, among other nephrology journals, reviewed for Pediatric Nephrology and Kidney International. Prof Olowu is the author of the novel, Beyond Any Doubt.
